On January 1st, 2024, I started a little experiment: write down three things I’m grateful for every single day. Nothing fancy—just three quick things, scribbled in a journal that I stole from my daughter. According to every self-help book, podcast, and motivational Instagram account out there, this is the secret to a better life. And guess what? They might actually be onto something.
After over a year of this practice (mostly consistent, kind of messy), I can honestly say it’s changed me. I don’t spiral into negativity like I used to, and that’s a huge win. It’s like I’ve installed an invisible filter that helps me spot the good stuff—even on days when everything feels a little sideways.
“When we focus on our gratitude, the tide of disappointment goes out and the tide of love rushes in.”
— Kristin Armstrong
Now, let’s be clear: I’m no gratitude journaling saint. I miss days. Sometimes I write the same things over and over again (hello, coffee). And on a few mornings, I’ve stared at the page thinking, “Seriously? Nothing? I’ve got a great life and I can’t think of a single thing to be thankful for today?”
And yet, those are the days this habit matters most. That’s when I need to dig deep. Because when I can find something to appreciate on the blah days, it shifts everything. Even just a little.

“Have kindness, empathy and gratitude every single day.”
— Jennifer Aniston
Thinking about starting your own gratitude practice? Do it. It doesn’t need to be elaborate. My only advice: put your journal somewhere you’ll see it every morning. Mine lives next to the coffee maker. Just… maybe don’t spill your coffee on it like I did. Yuck!
